Community Art Laneway

The Notting Hill Community Art Laneway is the City of Monash’s first outdoor community art gallery, bringing colour, creativity, and connection to the heart of our neighbourhood.

Inspired by the Carnegie Community Laneways, local neighbour Jenny imagined transforming an ordinary pedestrian path into a vibrant community gallery. With the support of the Notting Hill Neighbourhood House team and a dedicated group of volunteers, that vision became a reality.

From February 2023 to December 2024, artists of all ages and skill levels were invited to contribute. Hundreds of artboards were distributed, and the community came together through Art in the Park sessions, collaborative artworks at NHNH events, and projects with local art schools, churches, and First Nations artists. The project united the creative talents of hundreds of residents and extended across the City of Monash.

Today, the laneway proudly displays over 600 artworks created by more than 500 individuals from the local neighbourhood, the wider Monash community, and across Melbourne.

This initiative was entirely volunteer-run, with materials funded through the Monash Council Community Grants Program, Bunnings Notting Hill, and Pinewood Community Bank Bendigo Bank. Special thanks go to our returning laneway volunteers: Lucas, Albert, Trac, Johnny, Ting, Will, Ron, Deyun, Zeba, Kiet, Averil, Wilson, Sandy, Yan, Rahul, Joanne, Nandini, and Jenny. We also thank the community groups who assisted at working bees: Grace Baptist Community Church, Monash Men’s Shed, and Brentwood Secondary College.

Over 50 volunteers contributed their time and energy across every stage—from painting and repairing fences, preparing artboards, varnishing completed works, to installing the hundreds of pieces.

The Notting Hill Community Art Laneway stands as a vibrant celebration of creativity, collaboration, and the extraordinary spirit of our community.
